Fight for Our Health Coalition Releases Statement on Assembly Budget Proposal

SACRAMENTO, CA – Assembly Democrats released their budget proposal today on the heels of an event at the state capitol this morning where nearly 200 advocates, people with disabilities, health care providers, and state leaders joined together to call on the State Assembly and Governor to make funding health care a top priority in the state budget.

Judy Mark, President, Disability Voices United, said of the Assembly plan:

“The Assembly says they are open to making corporations pay their fair share – I hope they mean it.

“Right now, some of the biggest corporations in California are handing their workers a Medi-Cal application instead of health insurance. Their CEOs pocket tens of millions while their frontline workers rely on taxpayer-funded coverage to survive. This imbalance is exactly what the Senate’s Fair Share plan is designed to fix, and it’s exactly what we need the Assembly and Governor to get behind.

“President Trump and Republicans in Congress cut $1 trillion from Medicaid, using that money to bestow tax cuts to giant corporations and the wealthy. That law is in effect, and it is racing California towards a health care cliff. Up to 3 million Californians are facing the loss of their Medi-Cal coverage. And millions more will see cost increases.

“Being open to corporate accountability is a start. But right now, we need action. Because for the people we represent, the stakes are too high for half-measures.”
