CA Republican Congressmembers Opened the Door to Medicaid Cuts, Now U.S. Senate Makes a Deadly Bill Even More Destructive

Every California Republican Previously Voted Yes, Sending a Budget Proposal with $700 Billion in Cuts to Medicaid to the Senate for Consideration

Reconciliation Package Presents Rare Opportunity for Dishonest California Republicans to Protect Their Constituents by Voting NO to Protect Medicaid from Deadly Cuts as Bill Heads  Back to the House

Sacramento, CA – Weeks after House Republicans signed off on a budget bill that would cut more than $700 billion dollars from Medicaid, Senate Republicans are sending them back a bill that would deepen those cuts even further. Kiran Savage-Sangwan, Executive Director of California Pan-Ethnic Health Network, said:

“Just weeks after California Reps. David Valadao (CA-22), Young Kim (CA-40) and Ken Calvert (CA-41) voted to cut more than $700 billion from Medicaid – breaking their promises to protect health care for their constituents – the Senate has released a reconciliation proposal that would go even further, deepening cuts and putting more lives at risk.

“House Republicans’ lies — now magnified in the Senate’s proposal — threaten to terminate health care for millions of Californians. These cuts continue to benefit rich CEOs with massive tax breaks while driving up the cost of care for families already struggling to make ends meet. On top of the cuts already passed by the House, the Senate proposal would force parents to return to work, regardless of their childcare responsibilities, cut funding for emergency medical care for immigrants, and decimate hospital funding throughout the state.

Hundreds of people in their districts will die every year without access to Medicaid — including people fighting cancer, seniors in nursing homes, veterans, and children. ER wait times will grow longer, and overcrowding will delay critical care.”

“These Congressmembers’ constituents need to know that this package of life-threatening Medicaid cuts is only moving forward because no single California Republican had the courage to stop it. While we are working hard to ensure these Congressmembers are accountable for their lies, they have a chance to get it right and commit now to voting NO on the Senate bill.”
